Flying With the Eagles! The ASSP Experience The Ateneo Eagles: dreaming high, soaring high; that’s the way it goes in the Ateneo grounds. Excellence is one of the main goals of these people. It may be excellence academically, personally, or spiritually. For other students to attain the Ateneo lifestyle of Excellence, Spirit, and Service, the university’s gates opened for the ASSP. The Ateneo Senior Summer Program or the ASSP, generally, is a month-long program, that gives Human Up-Grade seminars, classes which includes some school- related subjects like Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, and English. It includes some outdoor activities, like outings, and it also take account of some cultural dialogues, as well as, some sports fests. Some parts of what was said actually are a big “here- here” on my part. The ASSP does contain these things. But as for me, it is a little bit shallow. The real deal on the ASSP can actually be stated by its own logo. The logo itself can summarize a half of what’s in the ASSP. As illustrated, twenty dots, one bigger than the other surrounds a chain slinging a pot with two wolves facing it. It was said that the twenty dots represents the twenty schools in Region IX that send their best students to join the ASSP, and the pot is the ASSP itself, where, even wolves share their dinner generously. Based on experience, I believe that the twenty dots represent each of us, with different personalities, different upraise, and different lifestyles. Each of us get to become one, big family, being able to share all that we could, like talents, care and compassion, to all. Our teachers share what they know and expect us to also give them what they deserve: RESPECT. This whole ASSP experience can be summed up also in five words: FRIENDSHIP, CAMARADERIE, GENEROSITY, EXCELLENCE, and RESPECT. Friendship is definitely inevitable to happen. The ASSP is actually a paradox in the lives of the people who have experienced the program. Such diverse people get to befriend each other, no rewards expected, just the bond and the friendship. The two houses, Animo, the house of spirit, and Magis, the house of emphasizing “more” to every activity, help build teams. The camaraderie between the two is visible with any situation, though in certain instances, there are some inevitable gaps with shadowing the two houses. In the end, there will only be one house that embraces the two; the ASSP house. Generosity is also a big thing in the ASSP. Everything done is everything shared. The teachers, speakers, program head, and all other people who served as guides; all gave generously through their teachings, advices, and even the simplest form of Hi’s and smiles, were all shared. The memories, both good and bad, they were all shared unselfishly. Excellence is definitely one of biggest goals of Ateneo. Throughout the Ateneo history, excellence has already been exhibited. It may be in the form of academics, personally, or spiritually. The ASSP showed a lot of excellence. Most especially on the emphasis of the ”human becoming”. And if there is that one thing that I would never forget after this once-in-a-lifetime-experience, it would most definitely be the program’s emphasis on respect. We must all respect each other because each of us has Human Dignity. It definitely is a great experience.
